BETTERING FUTURE GENERATIONS
As Strayer family members, our common bond is our appreciation for family.
While we live in many different cities and villages all across the country, something that can knit our lives together is a common interest in helping to make the greater community in which we all reside a bit better through philanthropy.
In the spring of 2014, all the seven living Strayer cousins (children of John, Robert and William Strayer) had a rare opportunity to be together and, at that time, we decided to establish a perpetual fund which will allow us and our descendants a unique opportunity to distribute the proceeds.
We may not be able to change the world, but we can make a difference in Michigan and beyond.
OUR FUND HOST
Michigan Gateway Community Foundation (MGCF), located in Buchanan, MI, houses the Strayer Family Fund.
The Foundation retains only 1% annually for its maintenance fee. (MGCF currently has more than 100 endowment funds with assets totaling over $16 million.) MGCF will always retain the principal of this Fund, but spending from the fund, dictated by the foundation's spending policy, may annually support a charitable organization(s). A committee of all seven cousins (and eventually, a representative of their children) participates in making decisions about how the proceeds of the fund are distributed.
Fund Spending Policy
Income available for spending is determined by a total return system. The amount to be spent in the coming year, including both grants and administrative expenses is calculated each fiscal year end, and approved by the Foundation Board of Trustees, using Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) guidelines in their determinations. The calculation is as follows:
A 12 quarter rolling average, or all quarters of the funds existence if less than 12, of the market value for the fund will be determined as of the beginning of the fiscal year.
The amount to be expended from any fund will be determined by the Foundation Board of Trustees, targeted at 5 percent of the market value as set in “a” above. This amount includes both granting and administrative expenses.
The amount that may be spent may be drawn from both ordinary income earned (i.e., dividends, interest, rents, royalties, etc.) and appreciation, both earned and unearned.
